December 2020

Hello, hello!

As we enter what is arguably retail’s holiday season — and with the year that has been 2020, be ready for the bombardment of all kinds of marketing tactics and an overwhelming amount of junk. Forcefully grounded, we’re shifting deeper into the substance of things. Now is the time to challenge ourselves, to deliver; an opportunity to refocus and be true to ourselves. Demand quality from everything, the people around you — the energy you give to others and receive, your purchases, your nourishment. Celebrate a different kind of abundance and prosperity.

Chimichurri

Herbaceous and impossibly satisfying, this chimichurri sauce is the real deal. Nothing except a tonne of fresh herbs, oil, chilli, onion, garlic and more garlic this Argentinean version — Trace’s boyfriend’s version makes a welcome addition to all your meals.

Insights on climate change

Diving deeper into environmental issues is understanding that change requires more from us than being an ethical consumer. With only eight years left to maintain global temperatures under 1.5 ℃, communities have to look to a higher level of ambition. The starting point is understanding what climate change is, and the system that is still benefiting from global emissions, the consequences in our lives and beyond — how we manifest change at a political and cultural level. So this month, we published the introduction; a series of which will be published over the next year; a map of the actions to undertake for significant change to happen.

Amandine’s edit
  1. While on holiday in Raglan, New Zealand, Benoit and I spent a few nights at Solscape, a place providing sustainable accommodations and hospitality. It was an exciting opportunity to experience living in spaces modelled by permaculture principles. A tangible example that sustainable design and construction is achievable.

  2. On vacation, I started Yvon Chouinard's landmark book "Let my people go surfing". Chouinard is a pioneer of environmental activism, and progressive entrepreneur, founder of Patagonia. His book is about Patagonia's upbringing and philosophy. This read is a bible to understand that another way of doing business is possible. And to see the man in action, a must-watch is the documentary 180°.

  3. The New Zealand government recently declared a Climate Emergency. According to Wikipedia, this declaration means that the NZ government admitted the reality of climate change and that it didn't do enough to mitigate the change. From now on, all national government measures should minimise the problem and limit global warming. At the moment 28 countries, out of 193, declared the Climate Emergency across the world. Still, so much work to do!

Trace’s edit
  1. Perfectly simple, Situ carefully selects linens from mill over-runs, and designer end stock (all sustainably produced) then manufactures each piece locally.

  2. An understated reminder for anyone resolving to embrace self-care, a recent purchase from Maggie Marilyn.

  3. I'm infatuated. My boyfriend and I are now puppy guardians, and these Earth Rated biodegradable poop bags are making the chore less so.
